Portrait of a beauty, one of the most anticipated films in Korea in 2008, is about a woman painter who disguises herself as a man in order to overcome the discrimination and constraints of society at the time. It's adapted from a so-called historical romance novel about a mysterious real-life painter in the 18th century.
Yun-bok Shin, better known by the pen name Hyewon, is a real figure who produced a host of thematically provocative and artistically excellent paintings in the 18th century. However, not one record of the painter still exists. A story about a genius painter who loved his patron’s lover and then lost everything, only to leave a miindo of the lady.
I love the visual aesthetic of the film with its lush photography and sumptuous decor and costumes.
The nudity and sex are also very nice. Early on, there is a scene in what is the equivalent of a high class strip joint in ancient Korea, where two girls put on a great lesbian show involving lots of gymnastic positions.
The sex scene between Min-sun Kim's character and her lover is also nicely done and beautifully shot, though far from being explicit.
Can I have more classy period drama with tits, please?!!
