You may have heard of the infamous butter-aided rear-delivery scene in this film in which Marlon "The Godfather" Brando made creative use of peanut butter.

The idea of this movie grew from Bernardo Bertolucci's own sexual fantasies, stating that "he once dreamed of seeing a beautiful nameless woman on the street and having sex with her without ever knowing who she was". An alternative, but similar idea for this film was to revolve around a passionate, homosexual relationship. It was ultimately scrapped when the French actor for whom the idea was conceived backed out of the film.

Because of the sexual content, the film was banned in Bertolucci's native Italy, all its principals were charged with obscenity in the Italian courts (and later cleared), and it was condemned by the Catholic Church. A Roman court ordered all copies of the film to be seized and burned in 1976, and the film was not legally shown again in Italy until 1987! In the United States, some theaters showing the movie were picketed. Public outcry managed to have the film removed in Atlanta, Oklahoma City, and other places. The various controversies surrounding Last Tango prompted both Time and Newsweek to write cover stores about it.
Despite its fame, the sex scenes are actually tame compared to today's standards. Still, it deserves to be watched just to see what the fuss is all about.

The sex is mostly fully clothed, although Maria gets entirely naked for a bathing scene, displaying some old-school luxuriant pubic hair; and Brando gets his great, flabby 40-something bum out for the final scene in the tango bar when he "moons" an outraged proprietress who is attempting to throw him out. Thankfully, this is the nearest thing to nudity he has. The sodomy scene, incidentally, gives us a candid "pelvic thrusting" shot of the sort that Kirby Dick, in his excellent 2006 documentary about movie censorship, This Film Is Not Yet Rated, tells us that the Motion Picture Association of America now considers absolutely beyond the pale, clothed or not.
