The Cement Garden is a 1978 novel by Ian McEwan. It was adapted into a 1993 film of the same name by Andrew Birkin, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg and Andrew Robertson. A quote from the script (as spoken by Gainsbourg in the film) is featured in the introduction to the 2001 Madonna song "What It Feels Like for a Girl". It was included in the book Horror: Another 100 Best Books (2005) by Stephen Jones .

In The Cement Garden, the father of four children dies. His death is followed by the death of the children's mother. In order to avoid being taken into care, the children hide their mother's death from the outside world by encasing her corpse in cement in their basement. Two of the siblings, a teenage boy and girl, enter into an incestuous relationship, while the younger son starts to experiment with transvestism.
If you're writing a thesis about dysfunctional families, this is definitely a film to check out.
Before Charlotte Gainsbourg pulled her disgusting crazy act in Antichrist (2009) and gave me nightmares about mutilated labias (thanks a lot, Lars von Trier!!), she had shown some pretty, naked sisterly love in this arty flick. She was 20 at the time but played the part of a 17 teenager perfectly thanks to her boyish features.
Nothing explicit or graphic but it is always nice to see a great actress in her youthful, bare glory.
